Isola Bella

Last summer I spent a few days in Italy with my family.

In the ‘Lago Maggiore’, a lake half situated in Switzerland, half in Italy, there are a lot of small islands. One of them is called Isola Bella (beautiful island). The whole island is a unique cultivated garden with a multitude of different plants and artistic sculptures, as well as stone walls and gravel walks making it possible to visit every corner of the garden.

In the middle of the garden there is a palace, an amazing building with beautifully built and furnished rooms. In the earlier days it was inhabited by an old aristocratic family called Borromeo.

I fell in love with this place the minute the ferry boat landed on its shores. As it was summer, all flowers on the island were in full bloom, the white peacocks that were walking around freely flounced across the lawn, the huge palms and banana trees were of the most beautiful green and lemons and oranges grew on several bushes.

Inside the palace, the most impressive sight to me were the rooms in the basement. The floor, the walls, and even the ceiling – all was completely covered with a mosaic made of black, white, and red gravel stones and shells. It looked simply unreal.

I took some of my most beautiful pictures of that summer on the Isola Bella. That is why I wanted to share those here. If you get a chance, go and visit the island! Ferries leave regularly for the island from Stresa.
