Hey there !
Looking at the rainy and cold winter weather outside I was thinking about what one could do on a day like this.
On a day that looked exactly like this I went to the botanical garden and the ‘Tropenhaus’ in Zurich. I needed a change from the grey and the damp, and that is exactly what you can be sure to find in these two places.
The botanical garden consists of a beautiful outer area and three greenhouses that maintain a warm humid climate all year so palms, bananas, and other sorts of tropical plants can flourish there. Apart from just wandering around and looking at all this beauty you can also learn really interesting facts about the tropes and their plants.
Each of the three greenhouses is hosting a different setting – one contains a tropical mountain forest, the other different cactuses, and the third one shows what a forest in a tropical valley looks like.
From Zurich mainstation you can easily take the bus number 31 direction ‘Hegibachplatz’ and exit at this station.
The best thing about the ‘Tropenhaus’ (besides all the amazing plants) was Bosi, a sweet little toucan that freely flies around in the greenhouse. Apart from the toucan, there are also several other colourful birds: parrots, budgies and others. In the middle of the greenhouse, they designed a river streaming down from a little pond with fishes and water plants in it. So cool!
The whole construction was actually built very recently, in 2014. Before that it was an orangery.
From Zurich mainstation best take tram number 3 direction ‘Albisrieden’ and get out at ‘Hubertus’.
The botanical garden as well as the ‘Tropenhaus’ provide a whole bunch of motifs for amazing pictures. I wanted to share some of those I took with you here.
By the way: entry is free in both places. 🙂
